Job Description

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include television, web, video, mobile and e-books. RFA is currently seeking an individual who will lead by example and motivate, inspire and nurture mission-driven journalists to give the best they can, at all times, to audiences in RFA’s Cantonese broadcast region as the Service Director for its Cantonese news service. This individual should be a visionary and a dynamic leader who brings gravitas and credibility to the service and has a deep commitment to unbiased, high-quality journalism and thorough knowledge of China and its Cantonese-speaking region. The ideal candidate will have demonstrably good managerial judgment and professional integrity to work in a politically charged and challenging yet dynamic media environment. He/she must be able to ensure the quality of journalism required at RFA and put the needs of the audience above all other considerations. He/she must have ties inside China in order to have real-time knowledge and maintain a keen awareness of the political, economic, sociological and environmental situations in the country.

**This position will be stationed in RFA's Washington, DC, USA, headquarters**

Responsibilities Include

  • Planning, directing, and supervising the development of Cantonese broadcast/webcast programs and daily operations of the Cantonese language service.
  • Providing strong editorial leadership and managing a staff of broadcast/webcast journalists.
  • Monitoring and maintaining quality control of Cantonese Service broadcasts/webcasts.
  • Applying sound judgment to potential controversial and sensitive editorial issues, and astutely flagging them for upper management and peers.
  • Directing the preparation of original material on news, current events, features, culture, and history, of particular relevance to the target audience.
  • Establishing and maintaining contact with Chinese experts, specialists and sources to enhance program content and to ensure content relevance given political, cultural, religious, social, economic and demographic developments.
  • Leading the Cantonese Service’s social media efforts to better engage with audiences.
  • Attending to all Cantonese Service administrative matters, including staff recruitment, personnel management, budget planning and oversight, training, and staff scheduling.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (degree in journalism, broadcasting or related field preferred), or equivalent level of knowledge, skills and abilities gained from extensive professional experience.
  • Essential knowledge and understanding of broadcast journalism or related field.
  • Significant demonstrable success in supervisory/managerial/leadership capacity, preferably in broadcast journalism, writing, media or a related field.
  • Native fluency in spoken and written Cantonese and fluency in spoken and written English; Mandarin language skills a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current political, economic, social and environmental conditions in and affecting China.
  • Strong writing skills, editing skills, and demonstrated ability to exercise unbiased, timely, and principled news analysis and judgment.
  • Demonstrated leadership to bring out the best in staff members, and ability to identify and nurture high performing and high potential talent.
  • Demonstrated integrity and dedication to excellence, ability to solve problems, multi-task, and deal with a variety of critical situations.
  • Ability to flourish in a fast-paced news environment, versatility, and knowledge of current developments compatible with 21st century media trends.
