Job Description

FSC is looking for a Regional Director Asia Pacific to lead all activities of the FSC Asia Pacific Regional Office, based in Hong Kong. He/she supervises directly and/or indirectly all business affairs and all staff of the FSC Asia Pacific Regional Office. He/she is responsible for the strategic development of the region for FSC, including stimulation of markets for FSC certification and certified products. Moreover the successful candidate will ensure the development of the FSC Network in Asia Pacific and an excellent service delivery of existing network partners in the region.
 
Main Roles and Responsibilities:
Strategic:

  • To lead and coordinate FSC’s official representation in Asia Pacific.
  • To lead and coordinate the revision and implementation of the FSC Regional Strategy for Asia Pacific.
  • To support the development of the FSC Network in the region, in line with FSC's Network development strategies and the FSC strategy.
  • To engage with government representatives on forest related matters, supporting FSC’s participation in the development of public procurement initiatives that are related to forest products, such as green building.
  • To promote FSC’s engagement with the private sector in the Region.
  • To support FSC's engagement with other stakeholders in the region, such as non-governmental and international organizations, in support of, in collaboration with and/or complementary to the FSC Network in the region.
  • To provide strategic insights from a regional perspective to FSC International.
  • To closely collaborate with regional staff, FSC Network Partners, FSC international, other FSC Regional Offices and the respective Regional Directors in Europe, Africa, CIS and Latin-America on all of the above as applicable.


Managerial:

  • To lead and coordinate the management of all matters related to the FSC Regional office, including the development of Business plans, work plans and budgets' operational management, formal records, legal and financial affairs.
  • To support, guide and supervise all staff in the Asia Pacific Regional Office and ensure close collaboration with FSC Global staff elsewhere.
  • To identify opportunities for public funding and donations for FSC’s work and supporting the development of related funding proposals by FSC International and the FSC Network in the region.
  • To ensure that the targets set for the Network Partners are achieved and to assess to their contribution to the Asia Pacific and international strategy.
  • To stimulate consistence of service delivery (accountability – self assessments) among regional staff and the different Network Partners in Asia Pacific.
  • To respond to questions from Network Partners, give direct support or refer them to other, more experienced Network Partners if needed, promoting knowledge exchange.
  • To support mediation and support complaints resolution on Asia Pacific Network Partners.


Other:

  • To work in close collaboration with the relevant members of the senior management of FSC, other Regional Directors and with the directors of the regional FSC Network Partners.
  • Additional tasks as agreed with the Global Network Director.

 
Execution of Discretionary Power:
Limited signing authority in line with organizational policies.
 
Functional Attribution to Organizational Unit:

  • Formal and functional reporting: The Regional Director Asia Pacific reports to the Global Network Director.
  • Formal and functional supervision of staff: The Regional Director Asia Pacific supervises all staff in the Regional Office of Asia Pacific.

 
Qualification, Experience and Skills:
The successful candidate demonstrates the following key competencies and qualities:

Education and Training:

  • Higher education level or university degree in a relevant field.
  • A background as forester or in forestry industry is a plus.

Working Experience, Style and Skills:

  • Project management experience
  • Hands on mentality.
  • Delegates task easily.
  • Solution and service oriented attitude to work.
  • A strong sense for diligence and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to plan and organize work.
  • Experience in overseeing management functions

Leadership:

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a senior management position in a multi-cultural and/or multi-stakeholder organisation, preferably with a business background.
  • Strong people manager and motivator with good communication, listening and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated political and diplomatic skills in engaging with governments and businesses.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Chinese or Bahassa is a plus.

Communication Skills:

  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills that contribute to cohesive team efforts and decision making.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, including social media
  • Active-listening skills.
  • Sound experience in communicating with media.
  • Ability and experience to facilitate interactive discussions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relations.
  • Ability and experience to work well within multi-functional organisations, located at different places in the world.

Others:

  • Ability to work well as a member of a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary, multi-lingual, global team.
  • Ability to represent FSC through his/her work with exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the FSC program by stakeholders around the world.
  • Basic understanding of the scope of FSC’s programs and activities.
  • Experience in working in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, global team.
  • Commitment to FSC’s mission and values.

 
It is on contract basis and stationed in Hong Kong
