Job Description

The incumbent will serve the learning community by presenting a clear and innovative vision for the school library program in program administration, innovation, learning and teaching, and information access and delivery that contribute to the development of lifelong learners.  He/she will manage the library across both elementary and secondary schools; organize, establish and supervise routines and procedures for the smooth and efficient operation and optimal service of the library and instruct students in the skills necessary to effectively access, evaluate, analyze, synthesize and communicate information in traditional and emerging formats.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Library Management:

    a. Planning and leadership

  • Design and implement school wide library program, consistent with library goals and objectives of the school mission and vision.  Communicate library program goals, program development and concerns clearly to school principals and teaching staff.
  • Develop policy for selection and reconsideration of school library materials; and maintain an efficient system of classifying, cataloging and circulating all library materials. 
  • Implement policy for student behavior in the library, as well as develop and implement workflow for library staff.
  • Plan the physical and virtual library space.  Create and maintain friendly atmosphere in library that encourage students and faculty library use.
  • Develop and disseminate policies relating to legal and ethical use of resources, such as internet and school network, plagiarism and intellectual property rights, and academic integrity.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, in-services, committee work and curriculum writing. 

    b. Collection:

  • Work with classroom teachers to identify, source and purchase a balanced library resources (print and digital) to support the curriculum and teaching goals.
  • Prepare and administer the library budget, managing budget resources effectively.
  • Supervise the regular inventory of library materials, evaluate the collection, weed obsolete and worn materials, and update inventory records and the catalog according to professional criteria and guideline.

    c. Users assistance and circulation:

  • Implement policy for circulation and use of library resources.
  • Provide teacher in-service for integration of library resources and technology into the curriculum.
  • Provide teacher in-service on relevant policy, e.g. ethical use of information.

2. Teaching-related responsibilities:

  • Work with curriculum & instruction administrators to ensure information literacy outcomes are a focus of instruction.
  • Involve with curriculum planning and assessment across disciplines and grade levels.
  • Model appropriate pedagogy, reflecting research in best practice and learning theory, and work with teachers to improve school wide pedagogy.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers in designing, implementing and evaluating instruction that ensure integration of literature, information literacy skills and technology into student learning.
  • Teach a curriculum of information literacy and technology across assigned grade levels of the school aimed at students learning to access, evaluate, use, create, and communicate information through inquiry and critical thinking in order to help students develop attitudes, habits and skills leading to lifelong learning and library use.
  • Promote creatively and energetically in literacy, reading and library-related activities based on student interest and curricular connections (e.g. Battle of the Books, Teen Award Programs, storytelling, book clubs, exhibitions and displays, author talks, literacy competitions and special events); and provide reading recommendations and programs for family participation in literacy support.
  • Prepare and promote topical and new materials to support class assignments and to promote interest in reading.
  • Promote literacy through 1:1 or small-group reader advisory to the general student population, including students who have special learning needs or unusual intellectual interests.  

3. Professional responsibilities:

  • Participate in professional development and keep abreast of latest trends and development in education and subject matters, share with peers and explore opportunities to further enhance any current practice if applicable.
  • Participate, assist, and provide training for library staff.
  • Support the continuing educational research of faculty and administrators.

 

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Education or Bachelor degree in any subjects with PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma of Education), or equivalent from an accredited university.  Master degree of Library Science or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • Holder of Diploma in Teacher Librarianship is necessary. 
  • Evidence of continued relevant Professional Development.
  • At least 2 years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Previous experience in an international school and familiarity with North American curriculum is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience working in library is highly preferred.

 

Skills & Personality:

  • Thorough knowledge of research, reading, writing and literacy development.
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of library cataloging. 
  • Understanding of relevant curriculum knowledge.
  • Commitment to working with students with a genuine love.  Passionate in nurturing students with patience care, understanding and empathy.  Have a positive and optimistic outlook and warm personality.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship with students and parents.
  • Ability to manage confrontation and challenging behavior.  Able to stay calm in difficult situations.
  • Excellent knowledge of the content and pedagogy.
  • High level of personal accountability.
  • Able to develop cooperative relationships with local international school and university libraries.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (Cantonese and/or Mandarin is a plus).
