Job Description

Purpose of the position

  • Working with the global team of lawyers to provide additional legal support and advice for Christie’s rapidly expanding business in Asia, with a special focus on PRC.
  • To be the day to day “go-to” person for all our PRC legal/regulatory needs, including being a crucial founding team member for setting up our subsidiary in China.
  • Able to provide user-friendly & timely advice and regular, proactive, legal/compliance training & “clinics” to help the business in China achieve its goals in a manner consistent with Christie’s global standards and best practices.
  • To assist the PRC management team with legal/regulatory risk management

 

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and drafting commercial agreements
  • Managing and handling annual inspection and compliance of all PRC entities
  • Providing Chinese language support to business
  • Work as a key member of the legal services and risk management team providing a comprehensive, solution-focused, user-friendly, legal service to the Christie’s Group in Asia, with a special focus on PRC
  • Support best practices and contribute to the development of group wide legal services and risk management team that is leading edge in terms of the service it provides and the technological platform upon which the service is based
  • Support key measurement criteria across legal services and risk management for the purpose of assessing the overall effectiveness of the legal services and risk management function in Asia
  • Develop strong relationships with external counsel in an appropriate and cost effective way keeping such relationships under continual review in Asia
  • Develop a strong ethos of financial management, working strictly to agreed budgets and carefully managing external legal and other professional costs
  • Work closely with other members of Christie’s legal services and risk management team to nurture all global practice management groups and to deliver globally a seamless legal and risk management service to the Christie’s Group in Asia
  • Support legal and risk management services strategic and operational plans for the Christie’s Group in Asia and elsewhere
  • Develop as a business lawyer, continually improving your business skills across all commercial disciplines and develop yourself as a credible business partner, not just as a legal technocrat

 

Experience & Skills:

  • Degree holder, native Mandarin speaker and native Chinese written skills, fluent oral and written English
  • Qualified as a solicitor in PRC with a minimum of 2 years PQE
  • Experience in commercial law, including previous experience with an international firm, or as an in-house legal adviser for an international organisation in PRC
  • Prior experience working in China an advantage
  • A strong “to-do” attitude
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exhibits sound commercial judgement when balancing legal risks against the business benefits
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to manage external lawyers on legal projects while controlling external costs to achieve the best possible service
  • Excellent legal and analytical skills including negotiation, presentation and a sound understanding of commercial and corporate law principles
  • Excellent information technology and web based skills
  • Strong and effective time management skills
  • Willing to travel to Shanghai and Beijing regularly
