Job Description

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham HK) is seeking to fill the position of Editor-in-Chief for AmCham Publications.

 

General Responsibilities

The editor-in-chief oversees all the writing and editing of AmCham’s magazine, online content, social media posts and the Chamber’s other publications, the Membership Directory, Living in Hong Kong, and Select USA Service Providers Directory. The editor-in-chief manages all the Publication Department’s employees, interns, and part-time personnel, along with freelance writers, and ensures that each publication is released on time. The editor-in-chief is also responsible for the Department’s strategic planning to boost revenue and editorial quality, P&L tracking, and evaluation of employees.

 

Job Duties:

The Editor-in-Chief –

  • Leads editorial planning and brainstorming for story ideas/design
  • Meets regularly with the chamber President and the Director of Finance and Administration to discuss issues, plans and other business relating to the publication’s personnel, financial, and equipment needs
  • Reviews all articles and photographs for accuracy as well as potential libel or slander, and provides suggestions, if needed, about any changes to make before the publication goes to press or is released
  • Has final word on layouts and design and which stories and photos get published
  • Generates ideas for new ways of doing things, such as developing multimedia content and revenue, increasing readership, and increasing distribution and sales
  • Coordinates with other AmCham departments on special membership packages and other member benefits, on publicizing Signature Events, reporting on AmCham delegation trips, and other appropriate topics

 

Typical detailed responsibilities include

  • Contributing editorial and feature articles
  • Conducting interviews when appropriate
  • Editing content, including cross-checking facts, spelling, grammar, writing style, page design and photos
  • Rejecting writing that appears to be plagiarized, ghost-written, published elsewhere, or of little interest to readers
  • Managing, motivating and developing the Managing Editor, Advertising Manager, and free-lance writers
  • Handling reader complaints and taking responsibility for issues after publication
  • For books or journals, cross-checking citations and examining references

  

This position requires:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience as a writer / editor;
  • Previous supervisory experience;
  • Proven track record as strong writer in English
  • Spoken/written Cantonese and Mandarin a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and eagerness to work as part of a team;
  • Experience with business / economic writing and editing; and
  • Experience with both print and online media, as well as social media.
