Where the Legal team fits in

The Legal Counsel sits within the Legal team headed up by Sarah Turner, General Counsel & Company Secretary.  Our Legal team is home to our General Counsel and Company Secretary, as well as some of Australia’s brightest legal brains, who play an integral role in supporting our multi-national business helping create products consumers love and customers value. Providing valuable input into the decision making process of our Residential, Commercial, Developer, Media, Marketing, Finance and International groups, the lawyers are integral extended team members for all areas of our business around the globe.

What is the role all about?

The Legal Counsel supports the Asian business of REA Group Ltd in the following ways:

• Prepare, review and approve legal contracts, letters of agreement, and other documents related to a variety of trade, commercial, financial, and operational matters (e.g. joint venture and partnering agreements, service contracts, IT contracts, media contracts) to protect the organisation's legal and business interests
• Manage the interests of the organisation in complex, controversial, significant, or specialised legal proceedings before courts, government agencies, or other authorities so that the organisation's interests are protected
• Advising the business leaders on legal issues impacting the business, including the drafting and hands-on negotiation of diverse commercial agreements with global parties.
• Negotiating and managing a wide range of commercial matters including advising on M&A activities and business projects and taking ownership of the drafting process
• Managing minor disputes internally and any significant litigation with outside counsel.
• Assisting in the management of corporate governance activities.
• Participating in establishing and implementing training programs across the business which are easy to understand and easy to access
• Influencing the development of appropriate internal policies and practices
• Proactively identifying legal risks to business and assisting in the management of those risks
• Providing legal advice and assistance on business projects

What we’re looking for…

• Law Degree, current Hong Kong and China Legal Practicing Certificate
• Around 8 years of PQE in either private practice or in-house (in-house experience or secondment experience preferred)
• Experience in working with team abroad and handling China project
• Ability to provide commercially focused legal support. Areas of expertise should include privacy, spam, competition and consumer law, intellectual property and IT is desirable
• Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills with both legal and non-legal stakeholders
• Superior written and verbal communications skills in English, Cantonese and Mandarin
