Job Description

This newly created position, Deputy Director-Welfare Operations / Head of Welfare Operations, will report to our Executive Director and will be charged with leading the shelter veterinary care team. The candidate will need to work closely with other departments including the Welfare Strategy and Research Department in order to further develop and enhance the performance of the SPCA’s Animal Welfare Programmes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • To ensure the efficient and effective execution of the day-to-day duties of the shelter veterinary care team. 
  • To plan and implement a comprehensive, cost-effective health care programme for all animals under the care of the SPCA welfare programmes, ensuring their needs are met and that animal welfare standards are maintained in accordance with Society policies and procedures.
  • To ensure excellent customer care at all levels for both internal and external users, responding promptly and according to Society policy to complaints and enquiries.
  • To assist the Executive Director in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives related to improving the SPCA’s Welfare Department and the Society as a whole.
  • To work with the Welfare Strategy and Research Department in developing welfare department operational polices ensuring that policies and protocols are in line with the strategic direction set by that department.
  • To further enhance co-operation and communication with all other Departments within the Society.
  • To work with the Welfare Strategy and Research Department and help liaise and develop collaborations with government agencies, animal welfare groups, private veterinary surgeons and other parties interested in animal welfare issues.

 

Requirements:

  • A veterinary degree with at least 4 years of practical experience in the field of small animal veterinary medicine  (registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong will be required)
  • A minimum of 2 years practical experience in the field of shelter medicine preferably with experience in a leadership role
  • Post-graduate training and / or a qualification in shelter medicine is preferred.
  • Management experience with a firm grounding in strategic planning, operational management, budgeting and financial management
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • A willingness to travel around the region and a genuine interest in the welfare of all animals.
  • Responsible, systematic and works well under pressure.
  • Drive and enthusiasm.
  • Chinese language skills would be an advantage
