Job Description

The Applications Developer is responsible for day to day support, development and integration of the Firm’s systems and applications that span the groups of: Business & Risk applications, Financial Applications, HR Applications and Document Management Applications. This role will work closely with a global IT organization and our customers to deliver high quality applications in line with the IT department's strategic goals and initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Formulates and defines system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding to develop or modify moderately complex information systems with minimal supervision.
  • Review business requirements and/or user stories to prepare detailed specifications from which web applications will be written (by self or others). 
  • Defines, designs, codes, tests, debugs, documents and implements various web applications.
  • Competent to work on most phases of systems analysis, development, integration and implementation activities.
  • Develop and maintain SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports according to standards and guidelines documented within our business reporting and governance model. 
  • Serve as a change agent to help transition the firm’s legacy applications into solutions leveraging new technology that focus on process improvement and simplification.
  • Participate in selection and maintenance of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) applications as assigned, including requirements gathering, analysis, software selection, implementation, integration, upgrades, configuration, documentation, as well as day to day problem resolution and production support. 
  • Participate and enforce processes and procedures for supporting requirements, analysis, selection, design, development, implementation, verification and support for packaged and custom applications – according to industry best practice.
  • Responsible for monitoring applications to ensure stability by identifying or anticipating problems and taking or recommending appropriate steps to avoid or mitigate them, and respond promptly to all problem reports.
  • Participate in on-call rotation providing 24 x 7 application support, ensuring that the application portfolio uptime is maintained according to defined SLAs.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with other members of the team, other teams within the IT department, and the Business.
  • Provide input to issues regarding overall operational status, application strategy, direction and plans in a timely manner and in accordance with the published communications strategy.
  • Participate in the maintenance and support of application business recovery plans.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) for software across the applications.
  • Regularly meets with the stakeholders to review and validate the business and functional requirements; performs targeted system testing with the help of testers to ensure the successful implementation of new systems
  • Responsible for supporting multiple projects at one time.
  • Accurately record time, electronically file relevant emails and documents, follow procedures for travel and other expense reporting and management, and timely updates to assigned Service Desk tickets.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, which should include 5+ or more years in the technology industry.  Law firm experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio and Project.
  • Experience in delivering enterprise software applications using common web-compliant technologies.
  • 1 to 2 years of proven experience working with Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) solutions, including vendor management.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience with SQL Server 2012 or later, including SQL Server Reporting Services; must have a thorough understanding of relational database concepts and the integration of SQL databases with other applications.
  • 1 to 2 years of proven development experience with various scripting languages (HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, VB Script, Python, TCL, Perl, etc).
  • 1 to 2 years of excellent troubleshooting skills with web development technologies (e.g ASP.Net, VB.Net, C#).
  • 1 to 2 years of experience working with team foundation server (TFS) including: build / release engineering, management for software web applications, test manager and test automation.
  • 2+ years of proven development experience in legacy technologies (e.g. VB, ASP)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, priority setting, and problem solving, especially when responding to unanticipated business requirements. Resilient and able to handle setbacks.
  • Proven ability to effectively multi-task, work under pressure, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong adaptability to changing organizational needs; capability to drive implementation and evolution of IT departmental project management practices. 
  • Possesses self and team awareness – recognizes and understands both personal and team dynamics and can leverage effectively to drive results.
  • High level of discretion, comfortable handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication skills and a keen level of attention to detail.
  • Effectively communicate and influence others outside the direct chain of reporting.
  • Strong business analysis skills, client services, and strategic thinking. Willingly ask questions where appropriate and guide others when required.
  • Willing to challenge the status quo.
