Job Description

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is recruiting a PSP Communications Assistant, to act as the focal point for and coordinator of media relationships and will help the office to achieve its objectives through relevant media, public information and communications support.

 

Requirements and experience:

  • Completion of the Secondary Education with certificate / training in communications, marketing, advertising, or other related discipline
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant work experience in marketing, communication, media or related field
  • Work experience with non-governmental organizations or charity bodies strongly preferred
  • Experience of working with private sector fundraising teams desirable
  • Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience in managing outside vendors, including PR agency
  • Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of writing, editing and translating communications for external media outlets;
  • High Proficiency in written and spoken Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and English and excellent ability to edit, write and translate communications materials in English and Chinese
  • Ability to interact, persuade and negotiate with people from different backgrounds and at all levels of seniority
  • Able to work independently and under pressure
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends and a commitment to working on events that fall outside of office hours

 

Responsibilities:

  • Executing the Communications Strategy and Annual Plan of 2018
    1. Assist and execute the annual UNHCR communications plan, included but not limited to branding and awareness events, as well as ensure that it positively builds the UNHCR brand and supports the objectives of Private Sector Partnerships (PSP)
    2. Coordinate with agency to ensure that all opportunities for media support of fundraising activities are explored to build a platform of awareness that will lead to maximum public response
    3. Effectively monitor key performance indicators, using results to drive strategy and developing areas with greatest potential
  • Reporting, Budgeting and Analysis
    1. Oversee all reporting to the Assistant PSP Officer and the Associate PSP Officer
    2. Manage the event and emergency budgets, forecasts and expenditure
  • Working with and monitoring the media
    1. Alongside the Assistant PSP Officer, Associate PSP Officer and Protection team, evaluate all proactive and reactive public information opportunities and agree on the most appropriate action;
    2. Act as a focal point for media enquiries, develop partnerships with journalists and media outlets as well as maintain and update a network of media contacts that will support the development of the UNHCR brand in Hong Kong and Macao;
    3. Carry out media coverage monitoring of UNHCR and refugee issues within Hong Kong and Macao
  • Supporting the PSP team with communications and information needs
    1. Act as a coordinator of information on global refugee issues generated by UNHCR and other sources and ensure that this information is available to the UNHCR PSP team;
    2. Take up duties of other special projects, in particular promoting the events of the PSP Unit as assigned by the supervisor
    3. Support the development of donor communications such as the newsletter and special appeals by working with the Donor Care Team and evaluating and editing copy as necessary;
    4. Work with the digital fundraising team and support the development of strong digital communications where appropriate;
  • Public Information
    1. Work with the Assistant PSP Officer and Associate PSP Officer to evaluate and respond to relevant community relations opportunities such as talks at universities and schools, faith groups;
    2. Contribute to UNHCR international discussions on public information and ensure that information and results are shared for the benefit of all offices
  • Emergency response
    1. Coordinate the response to emergency fundraising opportunities within Hong Kong and Macao including the placement of emergency fundraising press advertisements
    2. Ensure relevant messages and advertising reach appropriate media outlets and ensure that UNHCR is seen as a key actor by the general public
  • Take up necessary administrative work that complement the above duties, as assigned by the supervisoror
