Veterinary social work is a new and exciting field that aims to address the human needs that may arise in veterinary medicine.  The aim of Social Worker position is to provide emotional support, short-term counseling, and education in the following ways.   

1. Client Care

• Provide short term counseling by request from clients
• Provide referrals to community mental health professionals as requested
• Provide individual and group grief counseling associated with the loss of pets for clients 

2. Hospital Staff

• Provide support to clients by request from staff
• Provide short-term counseling regarding work or personal matters
• Provide referrals to community mental health professionals as requested 
• Provide support in mitigating compassion fatigue for staff 
• Develop or enhance wellness practices within the practice 

3.  Education and Outreach

• Provide continuing education presentations for staff and referring veterinarians on compassion fatigue, self-care, human and animal bond, grief and loss, and communication
• Develop a resource list of therapists who may providing pet-loss counseling support
• Speak to community groups about veterinary social work services as needed

A friendly and compassionate person with a positive attitude is essential for this position.  Experience with the human-animal bond, traumatic loss, grief counseling, compassion fatigue prevention, and/or conflict resolution is beneficial.

While fluency in Cantonese and English is preferred, translation may be considered for the ideal candidate.
