Job Summary and Mission

This job contributes to Starbucks success by leading the development of enterprise-wide application solution architectures, strategies, and designs for the implementation of application/business systems, in partnership with business and technology teams. The majority of the Solution Architect’s responsibilities are in one of three areas, Projects; Technology Strategy & Planning; and/or Global Technology Architecture family. Within assigned projects, the solution architect is responsible for facilitating, leading and review solution design activities; overseeing and guiding detail design activities; and ensuring application solution integrity. In their assigned business/functional areas, the solution architect will participate in technology strategy & planning activities including business strategic planning; contribute to technology strategies and roadmaps; and ensure cross-functional and crosssystems integrity. The solution architect will be assigned to one or more medium complexity business/functional area(s). Within the global technology architecture family, the solution architect will collaborate with other architects to build and maintain the enterprise solution architecture and advocate for architecture practices throughout the company.
 
Summary of Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop project and program based capability views, resulting strategies, and architectures. 
  • Guide Technology strategies and transformation of services to effectively deliver business capabilities.
  • Lead activities to define how technology assets are used to solve deliver against medium to highly complex business needs.
  • Within a project, the solution architect is responsible for ensuring application solution integrity; identifying and estimating required solution designs; facilitating and leading solution design activities; reviewing and approving solution designs; facilitating compromises between business requirements and technical feasibility; guiding detail design activities; determining optimal deployment sequencing; providing technical guidance to the project team; determining the technical delivery approach; and facilitating collaboration across global technology teams.
  • Within assigned business domain(s), the solution architect is responsible for analyzing industry and market trends to assess and communicate the value of emerging technologies; developing and presenting recommendations for leveraging existing technologies, and/or acquiring, building and deploying new technologies in response to business strategies; participating in business strategy sessions; and contributing to associated technology strategies and roadmap(s). The solution architect will be assigned to one or more medium complexity business/functional areas.
  • Evaluate technology and business changes across programs and multiple domains for impacts to existing polices.
  • Facilitates governance and enforcement of solution architectures for programs and programs based defined principles, policies, and reference architectures.
  • As a member for the global technology architecture community, the solution architect will collaborate with other architects to build and maintain the enterprise solution architecture and advocate for architecture practices throughout the company.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and provide consulting, guidance, and recommendations.
  • Continuous development of domain knowledge in both the industry and the Starbucks enterprise.

  • Systems and/or application development experience – 7 years
  • Systems and/or application implementation experience – 7 years
  • Large scale, enterprise solution/application architecture design experience – 5 years
  • Large scale, enterprise application systems detail design experience – 5 years
  • Diversity of systems/technical environments – 5 years
  • Development of application roadmaps -  5 years • Indirect management of people – 5 years
  • Project management experience - 5 years
  • Large, diverse, multi-national corporation - 5 years

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with both English and Chinese
  • Ability to provide leadership, with the ability to coach and mentor team partners
  • Ability to think in broadly and deeply within assigned area(s) and to easily shift from one to the other
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of issues
  • Ability to excel in a highly matrixed environment
  • Ability to influence others without relying on direct reporting relationships
  • Broad understanding of Information Technology (IT) Service Delivery and the ability to effectively interact with business customers
  • Applied experience in one or more of the following solution areas, Large scale customer facing applications with fairly large user base in term of both DAU and transactions; comprehensive retail solutions serving retail stores; End to end solution of ERP for retail business;  
  • Systems/application experience in at least one of the following business/functional areas, Ecommerce, customer facing applications, retail related technology, CRM, ERP, Supply Chain.
