Job Description

Assistant Vice President, Associate General Counsel

               

Job Summary:     

The Assistant Vice President, Associate General Counsel will assist with providing legal advice and services to support Allied World Hong Kong business activities and other Allied World branches in the Asia Pacific Group, including Singapore, Malaysia and Australia, as required.  This role requires considered and pragmatic legal advice to ensure that Allied World’s business and services are well positioned, while always protecting Allied World’s interests from a legal and regulatory perspective.

 

Job Duties:

  • Provide expert legal advice, services and guidance on all aspects of law to ensure the business is kept up-to-date with legal developments and is compliant with relevant laws and regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of client’s current business activities, and maintain awareness of statutory laws, regulations and judicial developments, assessing the likely business impact and advising of changes
  • Draft, review and negotiate third party contracts
  • Review local advertising and consumer facing materials and work with client / business to assure consistency with applicable law
  • Manage disputes and issues of litigation to ensure local business interests are protected and potential loss and damages are mitigated
  • Assist in managing and developing the overall relationship between local regulators so as to ensure consistent and appropriate representation at all levels
  • Manage relationships with other legal, risk, compliance and company colleagues to contribute to and implement Group initiatives, share best practices and enable effective communication and understanding of global/regional legal, risk and compliance issues
  • Assist with corporate governance and compliance requirements
  • Work with and manage external counsel, as needed
  • Manage special projects as assigned

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor with Law degree
  • 4-6 years of experience in a major law firm or relevant in house environment
  • Experience with insurance and reinsurance matters within Asia Pacific
  • Experience dealing with local Hong Kong regulators
  • Knowledge of Hong Kong laws and regulations and other Asia jurisdictions
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), as well as strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to consider local, regional and Group business considerations when providing legal advice
  • Ability to independently to negotiate and draft general third party contracts
  • Capable of working independently as well as in a team environment
  • Able to travel occasionally as required
