Job Description

The Role: Reporter, Asia-Pacific Insurance

The Location: Hong Kong

The Team: The Insurance Reporter is a member of the Asia-Pacific Financial Institutions Group news team, comprising roughly 20 reporters, editors and writers in Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Pakistan and Manila, covering the latest regional news about banks, insurers and other financial services companies. The team is part of the larger Financial Institutions Group spanning the Americas and EMEA. The Insurance Reporter also forms part of the Global Insurance news team, which includes reporters and editors in the U.S. and London.

What’s in it for you: The role offers opportunities for global and cross-sector collaboration, editorial leadership and advancement as a business journalist within S&P Global Market Intelligence and other S&P Global Inc. divisions -- S&P Global Ratings, S&P Dow Jones Indices and S&P Global Platts. The reporter will have the opportunity to collaborate with news and data journalism colleagues across the world, backed by a powerful repository of insurance data. In the spirit of continuous learning, the newsroom also offers extensive training and other development support, including a mentorship program.

The Impact: The successful candidate will be based in Hong Kong and play a pivotal role in the development of our Asia-Pacific insurance news coverage, notably the expanding and changing Chinese market. Responsible for delivering original features and news analysis read by a highly discerning, international business audience to daily and weekly deadlines, the Insurance Reporter will draw on a range of sources, including our rich portfolio of proprietary sector data and news gleaned from conferences and other on-the-ground reporting. Reporting to the London-based Insurance Industry Editor, as well as the Hong Kong Bureau Chief, the Insurance Reporter will also help set the news agenda across the entire financial institutions group, working with reporters in Hong Kong as well as London, New York City and other newsroom locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivering original features and news analysis read by highly discerning audience, including insurance professionals, investment bankers, credit risk analysts, buy- and sell-side teams, and regulators around the globe
  • Drawing on a range of sources, including our rich portfolio of proprietary sector data and news gleaned from conferences and other on-the-ground reporting
  • Working with reporters in multiple locations

What we’re looking for:

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken. (Knowledge of at least one major Asian language is highly desirable, particularly Mandarin or Cantonese.)
  • An ability to craft and structure stories in a newswire feature style to tight deadlines.
  • Some insurance knowledge with financial journalism experience. (Knowledge of the insurance sector of mainland China is desirable.)
