Computer Technician II

The appointee will work at the Research Data Centre (RDC) of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital to provide information technology and database management support to the Hong Kong Hub of Paediatric Excellence (HK HOPE). Duties include (a) performing installation, maintenance and operation of the networking equipment (including LAN switches, Wi-Fi equipment, firewall system, VPN gateway and IPS) and other LAN equipment and services within RDC and HOPE/CUHK campus network; (b) administering network and internet services server and devices (i.e. Radius Servers, DHCP servers, Network Management Servers, DNS Servers, DHCP Server, etc.); (c) co-ordinating with parties concerned on the operations and maintenance of the RDC and its supported systems and services; (d) handling incidents, network and systems faults, user requests, system administration and trouble-shooting job enquiries; (e) developing scripts for task automation and system monitoring; (f) performing scheduled maintenance works during non-office hours, and supporting 24/7 after-office-hour standby/emergency duties on a roster basis when required; (g) carrying out standby services support during non-office hours, including public holidays; (h) managing databases related to long-term storage of biological samples; and (i) performing other duties as assigned by the Unit Head and the supervisor(s).

Applicants should have (i) a Higher Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related fields from a recognised university or a technical institute; (ii) knowledge of SNMP, Apache, Perl, PHP and MySQL, and database under Linux platform; (iii) knowledge of VMWARE, Hyper-V, PHP programming and Shell Programming; (iv) knowledge of Data Centre operations, network communication protocols and standard, Data Centre structured cabling system and networking equipment; (v) good communication and interpersonal skills, and strong analytical skills; (vi) fluency in written and spoken English and Chinese; and (vii) an honest and self-motivated work attitude, and a strong sense of responsibility. Relevant post-qualification experience, and at least 1 year’s on-the-job or relevant technical experience are preferred. Experience in Linux, Windows, Computer clustering architecture and SNA/NAS architecture, and possession of additional professional qualifications and relevant industrial certifications (e.g. MCSE, CCNA, ITIL and LPI) will be advantageous.

Appointment will initially be made on a contract basis for up to 2 years (with contract-end gratuity for a 2-year contract) commencing as soon as possible, renewable subject to good performance and mutual agreement.
