Job Description

This position is for a Systems Engineer (Safeguarding) to join our Consultancy Service & Delivery Division based in Hong Kong. You’ll be supporting the NATS Project Management Office, System Engineering and Safeguarding Teams who are based in Hong Kong and UK.

The Systems Engineer (Safeguarding) would be responsible for supporting the delivery of projects in Hong Kong, for example Technical Safeguarding Assessments and other Projects associated with the on-going developments at Hong Kong International Airport. 

The position requires the Systems Engineer (Safeguarding) to be highly organised with a strong attention to detail and ability to effectively multi-task. Based in Hong Kong, this is an exciting role exposure to both internal and external stakeholders.

Occasionally, it will involve international travel and flexible working time to fit in with the time difference with the UK Office.

Reporting line:

Line Manager – Senior Engineering Consultant/Lead Systems Engineer (Safeguarding), with day-to-day working with Hong Kong-based staff

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Safeguarding

  • The post holder can expect to be involved in computer-based assessments of Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) Systems covering a wide range of technologies at customer airports, supporting Hong Kong and UK based NATS staff
  • Basic CNS knowledge required, however detailed knowledge of any of these systems is not expected but would be beneficial. Safeguarding assessments are currently carried out for all worldwide NATS customers. This is particularly relevant to this post due to new terminal and runway developments at Hong Kong International Airport

System Engineering

  • The post holder can expect to be responsible for evaluation of tender proposals, reviewing system architectures, technical product planning, transforming customer requirements into detailed design requirements, designing testing and commissioning requirements of air traffic control (ATC), airport related systems or electronic/IT equipment/systems and its ancillary support facilities, covering a wide range of technologies at customer airports, supporting Hong Kong and UK based NATS staff
  • Experience on project works for ATC or airport related systems is highly preferable. This is particularly relevant to this post due to new terminal and runway developments at Hong Kong International Airport

Project Delivery

  • The post holder can expect from time-to-time to be involved in the delivery of a wide range of CNS facilities at customer airports
  • The post holder is not expected to be an expert in each of these areas, however, understanding or previous experience of one or more of these systems would be beneficial
  • The post holder will be supported by expert Hong Kong and UK based Engineers

Additional Responsibilities:

  • The post holder will be responsible for keeping a log of all tasks that NATS is currently required to do in Hong Kong, helping to ensure that timescales and contractual deadlines are adhered to
  • The post holder will be expected to work to the NATS Project Management processes. Regular project progress updates will be expected
  • The post holder will be expected to work flexibly with other NATS projects including customers and suppliers in Hong Kong and elsewhere, as well as UK-based NATS staff to aid the delivery of projects
  • The post holder will be responsible for customer liaison and coordination on engineering project delivery issues
  • The post holder will be expected to take note of any business development opportunities that arise to ensure that NATS is fully aware of the potential prior to any tenders being released
  • Actively promote, support and participate in developing the relationship between NATS and all of its current and potential future customers

Qualifications & Skills:

  • The applicant should ideally hold a degree in an engineering or computing related discipline or have 3 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Excellent computer skills on a range of standard IT packages, such as Microsoft Office and AutoCAD, and must have the ability to learn new computer-based tools quickly
  • Training will be provided in the use of specialist software tools that are used to carry out safeguarding assessments
  • An understanding or an interest in airports practices and procedures would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of ICAO, EASA, and/or FAA Regulatory frameworks would be beneficial
  • The applicant should be familiar with working at Hong Kong International Airport, for instance project delivery, system maintenance and working with Airport Authority Hong Kong or the Civil Aviation Department; or any other International Airport
  • Experience of staff management would be an advantage
  • Experience of one or more of the range of air and ground navigation technologies used at customer airports, including voice communications, radar surveillance and navigational aids would be an advantage

  • The ability to plan own resources to achieve time scales for projects/work packages
  • The ability to communicate verbally and in writing, including production of reports, presentations and technical papers to a range of audiences and, customers
  • Analytically minded and detail focused
