Job Description

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority is a statutory body established by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2008, responsible for developing the West Kowloon Cultural District.

The purpose of the Installations and Displays team is to carry out to the highest international standards the installation and construction needs of M+ Museum in West Kowloon Cultural District. It involves fulfilling duties in all the technical aspects of art handling and installations, including but not limited to storage, packing, transportation to mount making and exhibition production. With an exhibition space over 15,000 square meters, M+ Museum will be one of the largest and most visually exciting contemporary museums for art and visual culture anywhere in the world. 

 

We are establishing a team of highly trained and professional art technicians. You will be expected to possess a vast understanding and experience of museum installation and technician work and be motivated to join a team committed to producing world-class exhibitions of quality and prominence. Working across multiple venues in Hong Kong and abroad, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of something unique; the birth of a new museum.   

 

You will be responsible for:

  •          participating day to day activities of the Installation and Display team by safely handling (under supervision) a wide variety of works of art and ancillary collection material during the processes of installing packing / unpacking, moving, relocating, transporting and storing artworks across M+ sites and external commercial storage facilities to international conservation best practice standards;
  •          assisting in exhibition preparation across multiple sites and venues and supervising and instructing external contractors and stakeholders;
  •          ensuring collection management procedures for the accurate tracking of the location of art moved during exhibition and storage works is adhered to museum best practice standards;
  •          inspecting works of art prior to handling and report any suspected damage or deterioration in condition to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the Registrar and the relevant Conservator;
  •          complying with the principles of Occupational Health and Safety and manual handling guidelines, including the operation of power tools and equipment used within exhibitions and storage areas;
  •          ensuring tools, equipment and storage areas are maintained in a serviceable order and tool and equipment inventories are fully stocked; and
  •          assisting in ordering and procurement of tools and equipment and other specialised apparatuses for storage and exhibition spaces.

 

You should:

  •          possess at least 5 subjects at Level 2 / Grade D or above in the HKDSEE / HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification, and

      I.        A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in providing technical support for exhibition construction, projects, perferably in museum environment, art gallery or art and cultural organization. OR 

    II.        At least an accredited advanced diploma or recognised university degree in Fine Arts or equivalent technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum of 1 year of relevant working experience in art handling and installation in a museum, gallery or other art and cultural organization.

 

Note: Applicants with a recognised university degree in engineering, or trade based background, and a minimum of 1 years of relevant working experience with expressive interest on working in the museum sector may be considered for the position.

 

  •          posses proven experience and knowledge of the technical methods of handling, packing / unpacking, moving, transporting and storing irreplaceable works of art of all medium; possession of forklift licence, a scissor lift operating ticket or a current driver’s license would be an advantage;
  •          have demonstrable knowledge and sound understanding of the principles and practices of Risk Management, Occupational Health & Safety and Manual Handling and the ability to apply them to Museum work practices;
  •          possess the ability to design and construct display and storage furniture fit for exhibition and museum storage purposes; skills and ability to operate power tools would be an advantage;
  •          have interest in art handling of museum / gallery exhibitions and experience in museum / gallery collection management systems, preferably The Museum System;
  •          be confident to convey ideas and information via written communications in a clear and concise manner and able to establish and maintain relationships with people at all levels;
  •          be able to liaise with stakeholders, use analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems, identify and propose workable solutions to problems with creative ideas; and
  •          be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese.
