Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Leadership role responsible for directing the UBR based Merchandise functions related to Assortment Planning, Brand Management and Product Development. Key objectives are to provide brand direction to maximize profitability, development and execution of assortment strategies focused on authentic and immersive products reflective of each brand’s essence and to establish strong partnerships with licensors and UPRGM management team.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Evaluate long and short term brand opportunities associated with existing licenses, existing and planned attractions and regional market trends
  • Partner with Planning Team to establish assortment strategies by brand and store that maximize profitability and support the immersive guest experience 
  • Direct Buyers in the development of products to support departmental plans ensuring that all products adhere to brand, social and safety compliance per UPRGM guidelines
  • Direct Artists in the development of program artwork and art to piece type that support the specific needs of the park. These include but are not limited to special events, regional holidays and park exclusive programs
  • Effectively integrate new product ideas, establish direction for art and visual execution and ensure products are set in retail locations according to plan
  • Partner with UPRGM Office and UPR Global Sourcing Office to maximize opportunities to leverage development and assets to and from other Universal Studios buying teams
  • Partner with the Planning Team in establishing and maintain a tiered pricing strategy based on the perceived value of the brand and individual product  
  • Establish strong relationships with licensed brand partners to ensure continued alignment on existing businesses and new projects
  • Provide brand direction so that Buyers understand and develop to the brand standards of each IP 
  • Lead and develop the Buying and Art team to promote an environment of teamwork and cooperation between planning, product development and operating partners
  • Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Position requires ability to develop and execute business plans for the business and manage performance against those plans.  A thorough understanding of key retail metrics (Initial Mark Up, Average Inventory, ITO, COGs, etc.) is needed;
  • Position requires ability to apply retail trend design and innovation to new product development;
  • Position requires knowledge of product development processes to include both design and production;
  • Position requires the ability to negotiate with vendors concerning payment terms, cost factors and requirements of our logistics programs;
  • Strong understanding of trends impacting the cost factors associated with the production and delivery of our merchandise.  Cost factors include, but are not limited to, raw materials, wage rates, fuel costs and availability of transportation assets. Understanding of import/export requirements is beneficial;
  • Understanding of Chinese product compliance and the ability to manage to those requirements;
