Job Description

The Open University of Hong Kong invites applications and nominations for the position of President.  The position will become available in April 2021 upon the retirement of the incumbent.

The University

Established by the Hong Kong Government in 1989, The Open University of Hong Kong today is the largest self-financing university in Hong Kong and has developed into a dynamic, innovative, full-fledged university comprising 6 Schools.

The University began offering full-time programmes since 2001 and joined the Joint University Programmes Admission System (JUPAS) since 2007. Currently, the University offers about 200 programmes of studies with over 10,000 full-time and 9,000 part-time students in its 5 Schools namely School of Arts and Social Sciences, Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, School of Education and Languages, School of Nursing and Health Studies and School of Science and Technology. In addition, there are about 2,000 full-time and 3,000 part-time students studying in Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE).

The Position

As the principal academic head and chief executive officer of the University, the President is responsible for leading the University, under the direction of the Council, in its pursuit of academic excellence, student development, effective administration, research and institutional development.

Requirements

Candidates should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Visionary and strategic leadership to direct the University to enhance its academic, teaching and student qualities as well as to raise its reputation, image and branding;
  • High academic standing, preferably at the level of Chair Professor or equivalent, with a proven track record of research and significant contributions to teaching and learning;
  • A proven track record in managing a university, preferably familiar with self-contained finances;
  • Strong administration ability with a proven track record in soliciting funds and donations from various sectors in the community to support the growth and development of the University;
  • Strong business acumen with a good understanding and insight of the market and student needs and the ability to lead the University to further develop in the Mainland;
  • High integrity, fair and commanding respect with ability to uphold the University’s core values and safeguard its interests;
  • A good understanding of Hong Kong and Mainland China, and an international outlook; and
  • Excellent people and communication skills with an ability to deal with diverse stakeholders.

Remuneration Package

The University offers a generous remuneration package to commensurate with a position of such importance. Initial appointment is made on a fixed-term contract and renewal is subject to mutual consent.
