Discovery College is looking for a Laboratory Technician I to provide a safe environment for students to learn and for teachers to teach Science through experimental work

Job Summary

This role manages the Science laboratory and assists teachers in preparation and set up of practical lessons in Science subjects and manages other lab technicians within the school.

The Science lab technician aims to provide a safe environment for students to learn and for teachers to teach Science through experimental work.

They ensure the provision of technical support to ensure the smooth functioning of equipment and materials. They are qualified in general lab management and aim to improve Science provision by continuously applying new skills and technologies.

Main Accountabilities

• Supervise a team of Lab Technicians II/III
• Supervise and co-ordinate the work of the LT II/III and be responsible for their PRD (Professional Reflection & Development).  Prepare practice lessons, etc – subject specialty
• Prepare duty rosters
• Keep morale of staff
• Deal with interpersonal disputes and issues
• Organize room/timetables
• Instruct and supervise Lab Attendant in the maintenance of the laboratories and the preparation of practical lessons
• Prepare budget to have an annual estimate of consumables and additional items for laboratories
• Keep detailed finance records & accounts of expenditure
• Purchase and keep stores of apparatus, equipments and other inventory e.g. textbooks in laboratories

Minimum typical education

• Diploma in Laboratory Technology from polytechnic/polytechnic university, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education or technical college/technical institute, or equivalent; and
• Associated membership of professional institute (e.g. HKIE )
• Grade E/Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education(HKCEE), or equivalent
• Desirable with grade A in Science subjects

Minimum typical experience

• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience

Abilities

• Fiscal responsibilities
• Tendering/purchasing

Knowledge

• Licenses - on acquiring of chemicals & disposal
• Government H&S regulation e.g. Laser license, radioactive, etc
