Job Description

Lead Engineer / Senior Engineer (3 posts) (Ref: LESE/P3.2, LESE/P4.2, LESE/P4.3)

Duties (Ref: LESE/P3.2)

The appointees will report to the Project Leader and the Centre Director or his designate (currently Program Manager), and perform research and related work in planning and monitoring the research project – “AI based safety application”.

The project will be involved in development and implementation of algorithms with artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics for safety and reliability in the areas of “smart building” and “transportation”.

Applicants will be required to: 

a) work with industry counterparts in consolidating academic research into tangible deliverables;

b) steer the project, and ensure good and appropriate applicability to commercial/industrial partners;

c) coordinate the delivery, installation and testing of the equipment; and ensure the equipment being properly installed, tested and commissioned;  

d) manage research and development activities including technical and financial aspects, and other project administrative tasks such as preparing project updates and reports;

e) work closely with research colleagues of the teams;

f) coordinate with local and overseas universities, research institutions and business partners, and handle enquiries in a professional manner; and 

g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Centre Director or his delegates.

The project will be involved in development and implementation of algorithms with artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics for safety and reliability in the area of “smart manufacturing and inspection”.


He/She will be required to:

a) work with industry counterparts in consolidating academic research into tangible deliverables; 

b) steer the project, and ensure good and appropriate applicability to commercial/industrial partners;

c) coordinate the delivery, installation and testing of the equipment; and ensure the equipment being properly installed, tested and commissioned; 

d) manage research and development activities including technical and financial aspects, and other project administrative tasks such as preparing project updates and reports; 

e) work closely with research colleagues of the teams; 

f) coordinate with local and overseas universities, research institutions and business partners, and handle enquiries in a professional manner; and 

g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Centre Director or his delegates.

a) work with industry counterparts in consolidating academic research into tangible deliverables;

b) steer the project, and ensure good and appropriate applicability to commercial/industrial partners;

c) coordinate the delivery, installation and testing of the equipment; and ensure the equipment being properly installed, tested and commissioned at the Centre; 

d) manage research and development activities including technical and financial aspects, and other project administrative tasks such as preparing project updates and reports;

e) work closely with research colleagues of the teams; and

f) coordinate with local and overseas universities, research institutions and business partners, and handle enquiries in a professional manner; and

g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Centre Director or his delegates.

Qualifications (Ref: LESE/P3.2)

Applicants should have/ be:

a) a master’s degree or above in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a relevant discipline;  

b) at least three years of research/relevant work experience;

c) strong analytical skill with experience in data analytics, big data and/or artificial intelligence (AI);

 d) proficiency in programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, R); 

e) knowledge and experience of reliability and safety area will be a plus;

f) knowledge of frontend and backend development being an advantage;

g) well-organized, capable to work under pressure and able to handle multi-tasking assignments in a multidisciplinary team;

 h) excellent interpersonal skills; and

i) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage.

Applicant with less experience will be considered as a Research Associate.


Qualifications (Ref: LESE/P4.2)

Applicants should have/be:

a) a master’s degree or above in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a relevant discipline; 

b) at least three years of research/relevant work experience;

c) strong analytical skill with experience in data analytics, big data and/or artificial intelligence (AI);

d) proficiency in programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, R);

e) knowledge of computer vision;

f) knowledge of corporate product development is a plus;

g) knowledge and experience of reliability and safety area will be a plus;

h) well-organized, capable to work under pressure and able to handle multi-tasking assignments in a multidisciplinary team;

i) excellent interpersonal skills; and

j) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage.

Applicant with less experience will be considered as a Research Associate/ Research Assistant.

Qualifications (Ref: LESE/P4.3)

Applicants should:

a) have a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline; 

b) have at least five years of research/relevant work experience with knowledge of corporate product development;

c) have work experience in leading data science projects and conducting reliability management;

d) have work experience in building and deploying large scale machine learning models, e.g. randomforest, xgboost, lightgbm, LSTM, Bert, etc;

e) be well-organized, capable to work under pressure and able to handle multi-tasking assignments in a multidisciplinary team;

f) have excellent interpersonal skills; and

g) have a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage.
