Job Description

Purpose of the Role

This role is due purpose.

1.  To handle major loss claims in Personal Lines of products (Household, Motor, Domestic  Helper, but predominantly motor third party bodily injury) in Hong Kong and Macau that have a moderate to higher monetary exposure to the company.  This may  include  coverage determinations, investigating the loss, conducting an independent assessment as to the company's exposure, participation in developing and implementing the most cost effective and timely resolution of the claim,  and quantum analysis, ensuring mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure while communicating developments and outcomes as necessary to all key internal and external stakeholders.

2. To lead a small team of complex claims handlers, each of whom has own caseload and level of reserve and payment authority.

Key Relationships: Direct reporting line to Hong Kong Head of Claims. Close working relationship with Global/regional technical manager, actuarial and underwriters

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Functional Responsibilities:

  • Managing claims handling enquiry; coverage determination, quantum analysis and legal liability assessment, where appropriate. Prepares and evaluates investigation strategies, which identify critical issues affecting liability, causation and damages.  Appropriately considers opportunities for third part contribution.  Makes an independent evaluation of liability and damages. Analyses exposures and tradeoffs between defense costs and settlement/judgment costs as new information becomes available.  Makes timely and accurate potential exposure recommendations
  • Ensuring effective vendor and litigation management
  • Reporting key claims messages to Head of Claims and internal stakeholders
  • Delivery of technical training to Complex colleagues as appropriate. Assist in continuous improvement through support for the Quality Assurance / Regional Audit processes
  • Contribute to maintenance of best practice procedures for Personal Line claims consistent with local and global best practice
  • A technical referral for colleagues within the Complex or Express  teams

2. Accountabilities:

  • Timely, accurate and customer focused claim resolution, minimising indemnity exposure and mitigating vendor and legal expense
  • Consistent proactive claims handling on an ongoing basis (i.e. initial file review, investigations and liability, negotiations and settlement, and litigation management)
  • Effective communication of key losses  and (LOB) portfolio messages to internal stakeholders
  • Financial control through consistent reserve and other financial transaction discipline
  • Accurate and consistent policy interpretation
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of claims related actuarial issues and the impact of claims on NLI

Leadership Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Time management – ability to manage & prioritise workload and diary management
  • Ability to contribute effectively within a team environment
  • Ability to deliver technical training to claims handling teams
  • Experienced in stakeholder management, both internal (underwriting, distribution and external (brokers, major account clients) would be an advantage

Technical Skills

  • Strong specialist knowledge in motor, household, and domestic helper technical claims, in particular motor third party bodily injury and general third party liability
  • Policy language skills enabling accurate and consistent policy wording interpretation
  • Knowledge of legal and litigation / procedural  requirements
  • Experience in negotiation, mediation
  • Experience in conducting technical claims audits and effectively following up on findings.
