Job Description

The M+ Research Centre is a core element of the museum. It houses the M+ Library and Archives and aims to become a key resource for scholars and researchers in Hong Kong and the region. Its activities are led by the Head, Collection, Archives and Library, who oversees the overall development and operations of the Centre.
We are now recruiting a Librarian who will be responsible for the overall organisation, management and supervision of the Library, including collection development and library programmes, and managing the library staff and budget, collection development, and developing and coordinating library programmes.
You will be responsible for:
  • providing leadership, planning and management for the library, including overseeing staff and managing budgets;
  • coordinating with Curatorial colleagues, leading the development of the library collections and managing acquisitions and subscriptions;
  • working with the Head, Collection, Archives and Library, in the development of library related policies and procedures;
  • collaborating with Curatorial, Learning and Interpretation, Exhibitions and other programme-related staff to integrate the library within the activities of the larger organisation;
  • ensuring adequate resources are available to serve a varied range of patrons, from internal museum and District-wide colleagues to external scholars and researchers;
  • serving as line manager for the Library staff and ensuring co-ordination of resources with the Archives team, including in relation to management of the M+ Research Centre;
  • overseeing the research consultation and reference service of the library and special collections;
  • overseeing the management and development of the library management system and the web-based public online catalogue;
  • putting in place a preservation programme for the Special Library Collection in liaison with Conservation colleagues;
  • managing activities related to book and publication digitisation and preservation initiatives and monitoring and reporting on their progress; and
  • maintaining professional and technical awareness of the Library team by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
You should:
  • possess a recognised  postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies or a closely related discipline;
  • have at least 7 years’ experience working as a librarian or in a library and/or archive setting, preferably research library in a museum, gallery, or academic institution;
  • have proven evidence of strong leadership, staff management, budgeting, project management and organisational skills;
  • demonstrate extensive experience in collection development and acquisition, working with resources in English and other languages, preferably Chinese;
  • have extensive knowledge of cataloguing standards and principles, and expertise in the implementation, operations, and development of integrated library systems;
  • demonstrate knowledge of current issues and best practices for archives and special collections including collection care, handling, preservation, and conservation;
  • ideally, have subject expertise in visual art, architecture, design, or film studies, and have an interest in contemporary visual art, architecture, design, or moving image;
  • have knowledge in contemporary art practices in the form of artists’ books, archives, exhibitions, and/or publishing is desirable;
  • have proven experience of working with internal and external stakeholders to deliver projects within tight timeframes and under pressure; and
  • have experience in managing staff in a customer services environment;
  • have some experience of budget monitoring and reporting;
  • have strong IT literacy, including proficiency in library software packages and databases; and
  • have excellent communication skills, written and verbal, including the ability to present information in a variety of formats, in English and Chinese.
