Job Description

We aim at delivering technical consultancy to top-tier developers, financiers, governments, councils and other relevant bodies on the development of a more low-carbon, a safer, healthier, sustainable and resilient future in the East Asia region. Robust, scientifically sound and practical solutions are important in this growing and interesting market.

This position will be with the Climate Service & Sustainability team in Hong Kong, in the area of climate risk and resilience. We are a multi-disciplinary team with deep technical expertise. We apply first principles of engineering and leverage our digital expertise to address our client’s burning questions and develop inventive, creative, and practical solutions. As a climate risk and resilience consultant, you will support our mission to help shape a better world and to simulate our clients’ resilient futures. You will work alongside a team of climate specialists to develop solutions to complex problems. Through your work, you will help to advance and implement cutting edge methods that keeps Arup at the forefront of our industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Undertake, deliver, and manage qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for multiple hazards including, flood, sea level rise, wind, temperature and climate change
  • Develop mitigation, adaptation, and resilience strategies for building and infrastructure projects and portfolios, corporations/institutions, and cities/communities
  • Collaborate with others within the firm on projects that can benefit from your expertise
  • Provide support to the growth of the climate service related business, including client development and business development
  • Able to represent our firm in a professional manner
  • Occasional business travel may be required

Qualifications & Experience required:

  • Bachelor Degree in Civil, Structure, Mechanical, Building Services Engineering. Master Degree or PhD in engineering, science, business, or risk management is desirable
  • 1-3 years of experience in practice or research
  • Understanding of factors which influence the resilience of buildings and other physical infrastructure, organizations, and communities
  • Strong coding skills to enable engineering risk calculations and interactive visualization tools for communicating riskExceptional communication, negotiation, influencing, and presentation skills
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, influencing, and presentation skills
  • Probabilistic risk modeling and familiarity with related methodologies, tools and guidelines
  • Application of performance-based engineering and simulation software
  • Coursework and/or practical experience in computer programming or software engineering
  • Subject matter expertise with one or more hazards such as wind, flooding, temperature, etc.
  • Interest in climate science and understanding of climate change scenarios
  • An understanding of the effects of climate change and strategies for adaptation
  • Understanding of vulnerability and risk assessment methods for utility and transit networks
  • An appreciation of portfolio risk modeling for influence of spatial correlation on portfolio risk
  • An appreciation for the intersection of insurance, risk, and resilience and a willingness to pursue opportunities in this space
  • Collaboration with local governments, universities, non-profits, building code bodies, etc. in developing codes and public policies around resilience
  • Strong client and stakeholder engagement skills including the ability to aid in development of resilience objectives, communicate risk, develop mitigation and operations continuity strategies
  • Experience developing cost-benefit analyses across a range of risk reduction or resilience strategies

This is an interesting specialist position and requires previous experience. Candidates with less experience will be considered for the position of Assistant Consultant if they can demonstrate extraordinary learning capability and manner.
