Job Description

A career at Arup offers you the chance to make a positive difference in the world. Independently owned and independently minded, we attract a diverse mix of people to work on ground-breaking global projects. We have an ambitious commitment to be the digital leader in the built environment and have digital teams and experts all over the world, who collaborate on world-leading software, data and technology projects and products. Being a global team means we value people with diverse experiences, backgrounds, specialisms and skills.
The role
As a business analyst, you will join a growing team that contribute to the digital delivery portfolio within Arup. Our technology projects underpin Arup’s digital strategy, which is focused on data, products and automation. You will work with stakeholders and users across the organisation to identify opportunities, articulate and prioritise business needs, and propose or design deliverable solutions that help make the strategy a reality. We are not looking for someone to purely gather requirements or write up processes – the role is an opportunity to shape and contribute to our digital transformation. The role is based in our Hong Kong office and will be part of a geographically diverse, remote team.
This role will form part of a geographically distributed team of 8 staff, reporting into the lead business analyst based in London.
“We are always challenging ourselves and the people around us to think differently so that we can understand our business problems better and develop creative solutions. No two projects are ever the same – each presents a unique set of challenges as well as opportunities to acquire new knowledge, learn new skills, and build new connections with colleagues from different disciplines across the globe.”
Mariah, Sydney, Australia
You should apply if:
  • You are motivated by the potential of technology to transform a global business
  • You enjoy working with diverse stakeholders to build trusting relationships that leverage your interpersonal and communication skills
  • You are curious and relish the opportunity to deliver products and solutions that hit the sweet spot between competing or ambiguous demands
Responsibilities of the role include:
  • Consult with business leaders to collaboratively articulate needs and identify opportunities
  • Facilitate, influence, problem-solve and negotiate to agree requirements across diverse cross-functional stakeholder groups
  • Design and validate the user experience to ensure quality outcomes
  • Formulate alternate solutions to business problems and conduct feasibility assessments
  • Product management of software products through the product delivery lifecycle
  • Work closely with developers, quality assurance, business change and support teams to ensure product quality, and support effective business change and benefits realisation
  • Drive continuous improvement and work for the overall success of the team and the firm
Requirements and skills
Essential skills and knowledge:
  • Experience of having worked on projects with highly satisfied sponsors and end users, having achieved tangible results and business outcomes, leading to value creation and benefits realisation
  • Capable of articulating the value of business analysis when engaging with stakeholders, and calling upon a range of business analysis techniques when eliciting requirements
  • Experience working with different delivery methodologies, with a focus on agile and iterative value creation in a user-centred design environment
  • Proven track record in software product development, data or automation projects in a cloud-oriented, secure, global landscape
  • Experience working with diverse teams across several global locations, time zones or cultural backgrounds
Desirable experience:
  • Several years of experience in the Architecture, Engineering & Construction sector, or the technology department of a large global organisation, ideally as a business analyst (or similar) delivering digital technology projects
  • Experience with user experience design and information architecture
  • Familiarity with data, analytics, business intelligence, data science, or metrics and KPIs
  • Understanding of policy and operating model development in an innovative stakeholder environment
  • Proficiency in Mandarin (both verbal and written) would be advantageous but not essential
Required behaviours:
  • A passion for diversity, recognising the innovation and competitive edge that comes from a diverse highly skilled team where equal opportunities are truly valued
  • Take accountability for delivery, being proactive and able to consider what else could be delivered to add value to customers
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills with both non-technical and technical audiences and building long-term collaborative connections
  • Strong business acumen and commercial mindset
  • Able to find common ground and accommodate different points of view
  • Able to lead workshops and engage in collective problem-solving
  • Able to influence others to consider your point of view and gain support and agreement for plans, changes and new approaches
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, seeking clarity from stakeholders, and being able to challenge the status quo with creative and innovative solutions
Several members of our team have transferred into business analysis from roles outside of technology, or from project / scrum management, business architecture, or from other professions with analytical or collaborative backgrounds. Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t meet every point above – if you meet most and are strongly motivated by the role and willing to learn, we are still interested in hearing from you.

We offer a competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience to the right candidate including Global Profit Share scheme, additional fringe benefits of maternity / paternity leave and long-term career development opportunities.
