Job Description

Our Client

Our client is a convention and exhibition investment company in Beijing and now looking for a General Manager.  The General Manager, report to the Group General Manager, leads and oversees the convention center operations, including aligning strategy, business planning and reporting.  Operational responsibilities will include marketing, sales, communications, customer relations, operations, event management, food & beverage, technology, financial performance, governance and administration.  This role must exercise a very high degree of collaboration with other leaders in the Group.

Strategic

  • Provide leadership and vision; communicate the vision to customers and employees.
  • Create and maintain a high-performance culture by communicating vision, values, reinforcing positive behavior, encouraging communication, and empowering employees.
  • Lead the development of strategic plans, capital plans and annual business plans, report and evaluate progress against approved targets in these plans.
  • Develop and enhance the organizational structure of the center and provide strategic leadership to all management personnel in the Centre.
  • Plan, develop and implement operational strategies in conjunction with senior management to meet performance plans within agreed budgets and timeframes.
  • Prepare monthly reports detailing all relevant information and data to fully inform Management of the Group of performance and activities.
  • Attend Group Leadership and Board meetings.

Sales and Marketing

  • Ensure that the Convention Centre continues to develop and build its brand in domestic and international markets in order to meet revenue and profit targets.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with government organizations, clients, media, and employees.
  • Support the implementation of the marketing and sales plan.
  • Lead the Convention Centre in developing and evolving its range of products and services in order to maintain a leading-edge, competitive position in the market.
  • Ensure high product and service quality standards by implementing and monitoring guest satisfaction systems, investigating complaints and initiating corrective actions.

Operational Management

  • Lead initiatives to maximize revenue and profitability of the convention center.
  • Innovate, plan, develop and implement operational strategies to maximize customer satisfaction and retention.
  • Continuously evaluate strategies, policies and procedures to ensure they are optimized for efficient operations.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Convention Center direct reports and other staff to deliver their responsibilities.
  • Support efforts in the center to deliver and enhance the sustainability credentials of the Convention Center.
  • Review the Event Reports daily and take decisions accordingly.
  • Oversee and manage all departments and work closely with departmental heads daily, be accountable for responsibilities of department heads and take ownership of all guest complaints.
  • Establish and maintain applicable preventive maintenance programs to protect and enhance the physical assets.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for the preparation and implementation of the Convention Center approved annual Business Plans including Operating Budget, Marketing & Sales Plan and Capital Budget.
  • Ensure that monthly financial forecasts for all revenue streams are on target.
  • Present monthly performance report to the Management of the Group that clearly explain operational effectiveness, trends and variances.
  • Review and update the risk to ensure organizational risks are minimized.

Legal Compliance

  • The General Manager is the Responsible Officer and is required to have a working knowledge of all regulations affecting the Convention Center’s operations.  He/she shall ensure that the center is operated in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and requirements of any governmental authority.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation relating to licensing laws and regulations, food hygiene and work, health and safety.
  • Monitor and contribute to Work Health & Safety by ensuring that the Convention Center has suitable Work Health & Safety systems, policies, procedures and reporting in place that comply with its legal obligations.
  • Ensure that crisis and emergency management plans are in place.
  • Ensure that employees receive adequate induction, instruction, training and supervision to safely undertake their tasks.
  • Act legally as the Public Officer and Licensee for the purposes of the sale of liquor.

Experience & Qualifications

  • With a strategic mindset, the ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in a senior management role within the venue management industry.
  • Preferably a minimum of 10 years management experience in an international convention center.
  • Proven ability to foster and grow relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working in China and dealing with SOE and local authorities will be valuable.
  • Leadership skills with a track record in motivating and supporting high performing teams.
  • Proven ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication skills - verbal and written.
  • High aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving.
