Job Description

The Role
The Design Technology (DT) & Art Technician is responsible for supporting teaching and learning in the DT department while also supporting the Art department in some areas. This includes preparing teaching resources, maintaining equipment and the teaching environment to a high standard, and supporting the teachers and Head of Department in lessons, all of which enhances the learning experience for pupils.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities
  • Organize and/or perform the maintenance of specialist equipment, such as machinery in the Design Workshop, or Technology devices (3D printers, laser cutters etc) in the Design rooms;
  • Ensure effective inventory and stock control of all Design and DT equipment and resources;
  • Use, and support teachers in the use of, specialist equipment such pillar drills and 3D printers;
  • Oversee a sign-out and sign-in system for relevant Design and DT equipment, through the direction of the Head of Design Department;
  • Use specialist equipment in preparing resources for lessons as directed by the Head of Design Department and/or teachers;
  • Assist with the use of IT hardware and software, including tasks such as file management, photography, copying, printing and scanning in the support of the learning environment;
  • Collaborate with other department members with major events, exhibitions, performances and workshops (flexibility of time will be needed for this in addition to usual working hours);
  • Provide technical support to staff and pupils as required;
  • Support areas of need within the Art department, as agreed by the Head of Design Department, in areas such as framing, stock control and maintenance.
Displays
Responsible for departmental displays and the preparation, mounting and installation of displays in classrooms and around the wider campus:
  • Creating and maintaining the Design & DT and, where needed, Art classroom and corridor displays;
  • Creating and hanging exhibitions for assemblies, events, options events and open evenings;
  • Mounting/Displaying final examination and/or end of year exhibitions;
  • Assisting with the organisation of exhibitions;
  • Maintaining and renewing pupil work used in displays in the foyer and other areas of the campus;
  • Assisting the Head of Deign Department in establishing and maintaining displays related to university and college courses and career opportunities in the Design and DT fields;
  • To assist in creating displays, props and scenery for school productions and whole school events.
Maintenance duties
  • Ensure that workshop machinery and equipment is regularly inspected and maintained;
  • Ensure relevant Health & Safety risk assessments and in place, followed and updated as needed;
  • Ensure suitable safety equipment is maintained and appropriate training for their use is in place;
  • Carry out many and various minor accommodation ‘handyman’ tasks e.g. fitting shelves, mending equipment, changing light bulbs, small woodwork projects etc;
  • Replacements of consumables;
  • Undertake the management of Keys for the department;
  • Maintaining specialist workshop areas within the Design department.
General
  • Organise materials, equipment and tools – stock check and maintenance;
  • Maintain the storing and displaying of resources and pupil work;
  • Stock-taking and ordering of materials, and equipment;
  • Take delivery of stores and materials, making arrangements for their general storage and undertaking general porterage duties;
  • Keeping classroom materials/consumables stocked up;
  • Assisting teachers in preparing resources for classes: Cutting paper/card, stretching paper to boards, setting up equipment for practical lessons, maintaining classroom stationary, organise and catalogue books in department;
  • Assist with organisation of trips and where necessary act as a chaperone on trips;
  • Provide support for the teacher during practical lessons;
  • Work as part of a team within the Design Department assisting each other as and when required;
  • Undertake such other tasks relevant to the work of the Design or Art Departments or the needs of other departments and the wider school that may arise as directed/agreed upon by the Head of Design Department;
  • Attend all health and safety training courses as determined by the management of the school and/or department;
  • Administrative duties as directed by Head of Department or other senior members of staff.
Daily Preparation
  • Prepare materials and equipment as required by the subject teachers prior to lessons;
  • Ensure equipment is kept in optimum condition and stored correctly;
  • Organise extra equipment for lessons;
  • Regularly maintain the equipment and tools in the workshop and classroom areas;
  • Keep all classrooms organised and free from hazards.
Requirements
  • Degree or Higher Diploma in appropriate discipline;
  • Experience working in an international school setting is preferred;

opened its doors to its first pupils in August 2018. This co-educational day school will cater largely for international pupils, reflecting the truly multi-cultural nature of this vibrant city.     MCHK opened with 400 pupils in Prep 1 – Foundation Year 3 (Years 1-9) and will grow year on year to reach a capacity of 960 pupils in Years 1-13.
