Job Description
M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, we are building one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world, with a bold ambition to establish ourselves as one of the world’s leading cultural institutions. Our aim is to create a new kind of museum that reflects our unique time and place, a museum that builds on Hong Kong’s historic balance of the local and international to define a distinctive and innovative voice for Asia’s twenty-first century.
(This is a fixed-term contract position of 2-year with possibility for renewal subject to organisational needs and individual performance.)
You will be responsible for:
- supporting the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays and production team to manage the exhibition lighting requirements across all exhibition spaces and coordinating these needs within the exhibition timelines and across key stakeholders;
- working with various departments on the installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of lighting components in the Museum’s exhibition spaces;
- assisting with the scheduling, coordination, installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of in gallery lighting fixtures, and controls;
- collaborating with exhibition designers, conservators, production and installations teams on applying lighting techniques appropriate for museum exhibition spaces;
- working with the Exhibition Production Manager on undertaking the re/lamping of in-gallery lighting for exhibitions, coordinating with exhibition managers, internal art technicians and Facilities Management as needed;
- coordinating with supervisors and Facilities Management on in gallery lighting needs and recommendations to ensure all requirements are met;
- liaising with and instructing subcontractors and vendors on lighting needs and requirements when needed;
- coordinating the electrical load calculations for lighting track to ensure that the design load is balanced and within the design limits;
- jointly overseeing physical and digital inventory and storage of lighting equipment and management of assets; and
- performing any other ad hoc duties as required.
You should:
- possess at least 5 subjects at Level 2/Grade E or above in the HKDSEE/HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification, and
- A minimum of 3 years of full-time technical experience in lighting support in a museum, gallery or performing arts theatre operating to international standards of best practice with demonstrable experience in installation, and exhibition support; OR
- At least an accredited Advanced Diploma or Bachelor in Fine Arts/ Lighting or equivalent technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience;
- proven knowledge of experience in applying lighting techniques appropriate to a museum, art gallery or similar environment;
- possess a demonstrated understanding of lighting theory and dimming controls;
- possess strong knowledge of Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) and DMX Programming control system, preferably have good knowledge of IP Networking;
- possess literacy in various lighting fixtures, tracks, components; a basic familiarity of audio visual and computer hardware monitors, graphic card configurations, peripherals such as monitors, projectors, media players and control devices (LAN wireless) is preferred;
- be proactive in leading discussions, asking questions and offering creative solutions;
- be a team player and independent whereas at the same time working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment;
- be able to prioritise needs in a variety of situations and manage multiple projects concurrently;
- be computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office; Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk CAD, Vectorworks or Google Sketch-Up are an advantage;
- be a Registered Electrical Worker (Grade A or above) and Construction Industry Training Certificate (Green Card) under Section 6BA(2) of the Factories is preferred; and
- have excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical issues in English and Chinese.
