Job Description
M+ Internship Programme 2024/2025 (Summer Intake)– Archives & Library (Ref: R5408)
The M+ Internship Programme, supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong, is a unique opportunity for those who are interested in developing a career in the museum field. You will work closely with the M+ team full time for a period of one year, gaining both practical and theoretical training. This intake will take place from August 2024 to August 2025.
The Archives & Library (A&L) Internship offers valuable training for individuals seeking practical experience in managing museum archives and library collections. Under the guidance of the Librarian, you will actively participate in collection management projects and contribute to community engagement programmes. Responsibilities will encompass assisting with the reference library circulation and copy-cataloguing materials, which ensures cataloguing consistency across our collections. This in turn makes our library's catalogue more navigable for our users. You will have the opportunity to discover a rich research collection of books on visual arts, design and architecture, moving image, museology, art conservation, interpretation, and other subjects. You will also support the work of the archivists and engage with visitors to the Research Centre and staff fostering meaningful interactions. This internship provides a unique opportunity to support the A&L team while developing essential skills and knowledge in the field.
You will be able to:
- gain knowledge and insight into collection management practices within a museum with emphasis on archives and library;
- collaborate and engage with colleagues from various departments, including Curatorial and Conservation;
- gain experience in establishing and operating a library within a museum setting;
- gain knowledge of library terminology and standard library practices, including cataloguing rules and bibliographic record structure;
- work in the Archives Team, expanding your understanding of the role and importance of archival practices and processes;
- familiarize yourself with M+ within the context of a cultural district, equipping you with invaluable skills for a career in the arts and museum sector.
You need to:
- be a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative region;
- possess a recognised university degree ideally in relevant fields such as Library Studies, Information Management or Art History;
- show interest in arts and culture, and the work of museums and libraries in general;
- have good computer skills, specifically relating to MS Office and collections management software; experience of ALMA and PRIMO library systems is desirable but not required;
- be highly organized, detail-oriented and able to work independently;
- have a good command of spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese / Mandarin).
