Job Description
Law Librarian (at the rank of Assistant Librarian I/II) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 527512)
We are looking for a Law Librarian to join the University Libraries to provide quality service for the Faculty of Law and/or other functional area(s).
The Role
The appointee will work under the general direction of the Head of Lending Services and Associate Librarian (Learning and Research Services). He/She will be responsible for managing and leading the service provision for Law Faculty and/or other functional area(s), overseeing Library staff and services in the Law Library; developing, facilitating access to, and evaluating subject-based and related information resources responsive to needs; liaison with the Law Faculty including understanding and addressing their needs and communicating the Libraries’ collections and services capabilities; providing learning and research support, library training, information services and advanced consultation services via face-to-face and online modes; coordinating and communicating with other units of the Libraries; collaborating with other partners on campus and beyond; and participation in library-wide projects and activities.
Qualifications and Qualities
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree and a recognized professional qualification in librarianship (M.L.S. or equivalent) OR a Master’s degree or advanced degree relevant to the position; at least 5 years of post-qualification experience in academic libraries, OR an equivalent combination of relevant experience in working with learning and research processes. A higher degree in a second subject relevant to the duties and legal training such as a law degree or paralegal qualification would be advantages.
Essential qualities include:
- excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, crisis management and conflict resolution skills;
- oral and written ability to present ideas unambiguously and convincingly;
- ability to work independently and with initiative;
- collaborative spirit in working with staff within the Library and the University community at large;
- demonstrated strong leadership with the ability to delegate effectively, discharge duties to staff and set appropriate standards for the delivery of service/work;
- ability to motivate staff and foster a positive team environment;
- proven ability to plan and implement significant projects;
- demonstrated high level of professional competence in the Law subject discipline as well as information resources at research level in academic institutions, information resources management, curricula design and instruction, research, analysis and interpretation;
- knowledge of the learning and research process and latest trends and developments in information technology and in particular those that apply to an educational environment; and
- written and spoken Chinese skills will be a distinct advantage.
Applicants with less professional experience in library and information science may be considered for appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian II.

What We Offer
The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
