Job Description

Role Purpose:
 
Leads sales for Handbags & Accessories across Asian region.  Responsible for increasing consignment and buying activity, ensuring a healthy pipeline of new business for all channels, co-ordinating the sale and property. Focus on marketing the objects.
 
Key Responsibilities:

Successful Sales & Leadership

  • Leads the sale strategy for Handbags & Accessories, working in conjunction with the 20/21 cluster Business Management team to ensure sales are curated at an optimum level
  • Work with 20/21 Business Management team to set sales budgets, control costs and maintain profitability
  • Oversees the successful running of the sale e.g. pre and post-sale debriefs, supporting view and any exhibition requirements, people and objects focused
  • Contributes to the curation of catalogues e.g. production and layout
  • Uses networking experience and convening power to maximise success of the sales e.g. develops relationships with collectors/clients/consultants/museum and curatorial staff to foster potential business
  • Foster ties with other relevant specialists and sale sites
  • Ensures all property entered for sale meets standards for provenance and condition reports as appropriate
  • Works with Client Strategy Director and Business Intelligence teams to ensure client information databases are up to date and that client metrics are monitored and inform the department business development activities 

 

Specialist Expertise

  • Provides subject matter expertise on pricing, valuations, cataloguing, researching for staff at all levels across the department
  • Leads specialists with appraisals and following through on consignments in all stages of the sale
  • Oversees cataloguer / research team to ensure all condition reports completed
  • Maintains and continually updates own specialist knowledge, building on credibility in a specialist area, role models for other staff
  • Broadens knowledge of other Categories within the cluster in order to identify and develop cross-selling opportunities
 
Managing Client Relationships
  • Spends dedicated effort to develop a trusted advisor relationship with each client
  • Manages own clients and continues to develop and nurture a network of clients and contacts to convert for sales, provides support to junior colleagues
  • Ensures a good understanding of each client’s preferred working style and interests and adapts accordingly
  • Works closely with 20/21 Cluster Business Management team, marketing, client strategy and business intelligence to maximise channels (e-commerce, auction, private sales) and client opportunities

 

 Deal Making

  • Excellent business getting experience and strategic client development at an international level, continues to seek ways to expand, ensures the right people are involved and fully briefed across the department, ensuring alignment of targets
  • Oversees the successful completion/close of deals

 

Developing New Business:

  • Uses networking experience and convening power to maximise success of sales for the department
  • Continually builds an understanding of the current market and keeps an eye on the key players (buying and selling)
  • Ensures that new business opportunities are acted on and followed through
  • Reviews market trends and makes recommendations for change using informed data, knowledge and experience gained from Client Strategy Director, Marketing and Business Intelligence teams

 

Enhancing Christie’s brand

  • Acts as a representative of Christie’s and builds alliances and networks of key influencers in the market
  • Uses own specialist expertise e.g. writing articles, lecturing etc. to maintain and grow Christie’s presence in the market, grow its market share and create competitive advantage

 

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History or equivalent
  • Minimum of 8+ years’ experience
  • Commercial and business awareness and ability to market to sophisticated audience
  • Demonstrated transactional experience to drive sales leading a team
  • Demonstrated ability in appraising property and business-getting with high level clients
  • Excellent communications skills and interpersonal skills
  • International cultural awareness and language skills an advantage
  • Exceptional client service skills
  • Strong organisational skills with an ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Experience of managing and leading a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills – relationship builder, facilitator, diplomat, influencer, assertive
  • Ability to influence across all levels and geographies
  • Self-starter, highly motivated and outcome oriented
