Job Description

Strategically support the growth of Ocean Product through effectively executing global carrier strategy; procuring best terms particularly including pricing/capacity/equipment/credit; closely collaborating with local carrier management, ocean product teams, regional and cluster capacity management, overseas route counterparts, sales community in delivering the growth targets for the responsible route; finding strategic solutions for branches and commercial organizations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the execution of the global ocean carrier strategy in line with global and regional guidance.
  • To procure & provide the best possible terms for Damco in terms of Price & Duration, Capacity & Equipment & Credit line
  • To contribute to the strategic process of selection & development of carriers who serve Damco’s product needs in terms of Pricing, Service Quality & Reliability, Diversity of Solutions - Frequency & Transit-times & Connectivity & Visibility
  • To work in close collaboration with the Global Ocean Carrier Management network, (North Asia and South East Asia) Regional Ocean Product Management, Cluster & Branch line management to ensure alignment and the delivery of a best in class ocean product.
  • To be highly informed of all ocean freight market developments & trends. To cascade key market intelligence to relevant stakeholders and align with RCMs on achievable procurement projections which in turn facilitate balanced, risk appropriate commercial/pricing decisions.
  • To be fully aware of all existing pricing solutions by holding a strong knowledge of our existing contract options and rates – via collaboration with Trade Focused LCMs.
  • Engage closely with their sales community in order to remain current and fully aware of changing customer needs and those business trends which impact upon optimizing Ocean Carrier Management. Joint customer facing visits with sales is strongly encouraged as is Proactive re-buying activity and suggestions to protect and optimize margins on existing business – both locally & overseas controlled traffic.
  • To work closely with the Ocean Capacity Management function. Identify strategic capacity issues and proactively work with regional and cluster capacity management to solve these. To take up problematic, tactical, capacity provision issues with carriers regionally when required Leverage strong regional carrier relationships to optimize achieved capacity in periods of peak demand. Also to find additional carrier & capacity alternatives to further augment standard capacity in periods of peak demand.
  • Ensure that Damco deliver on commitments to our Core Ocean Carriers and thereby cultivate a perceived status as a reliable and valued strategic partner.
  • Always strive to optimize VIP earnings in balance with other tactical business considerations.
  • Organize and lead periodic (quarterly) business review meetings with all Core Carriers to review performance, address issues, to develop enhancement initiatives and to manage and steer a positive perception.

 

Required knowledge & Skills  

  • At least 5 years of ocean industry experience (preferably with a mix of Liner & NVOCC / Ocean forwarding experience)
  • Experience & success in a procurement related positions
  • A proven ability to work and thrive in a flexible matrix organisation with focus on networking and collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Team player with proven ability to work under pressure
  • Passion for service delivery and cost effectiveness – and for identifying how to constantly improve.
  • Strong commercial sense and drive – sales and/or pricing experience is an advantage
  • Strong drive, initiative and engagement – ability to work self-directed and well organised.
  • Strong knowledge of ocean freight market in the local geography served
  • Good speaking and writing communication skills in both English and the local language of business.
