Job Description

Role Purpose

 

The purpose of this position is to:

 

  • analyse, understand and respond to the content needs of targeted customer segments and/or other business opportunities and to implement innovative product development plans to serve these constituencies

 

  • expand and enhance our content by identifying through ongoing customer engagement, designing and implementing the development (in print, digital and online formats) of new products and by developing enhancements of existing products

 

  • support the achievement of targets in the areas of revenue, content volume, format development, financial analysis, business planning, and marketing support activities for print and online products related to local publishing and imports 

 

  • develop and own the forward development roadmap for HK content, in collaboration with other PDM(s) and contribute to ongoing content strategy

 

  • lead practice area reviews and champion cross-format content development

 

 

Accountabilities:   

 

  • Strategic – Contribute to and implement content development strategy for the development of new products and creation of a new content pipeline, delivering ongoing growth for the Content business. Implement a plan for the development and enhancement of existing products within portfolio as an outcome of the annual product review process and market knowledge. Deliver new and enhanced products each year in accordance with set requirements, achieving volume and sales targets.

 

  • Assess Commercial Viability – Conduct thorough commercial and market evaluation of each project/product to assess whether it should be undertaken; whether it meets the needs of our customers; whether it will achieve commercial success; its priority and the necessary resource needs.

 

  • Analysis – Utilise business and analytical perspectives, analysing information and designing processes, setting project parameters, assuring process quality, evaluating projects’ value and working in a team environment.

 

  • Project Management – Utilise strong project management skills to plan, organise, design and lead projects to a timely, cost-effective completion. Develop project plans, determine staffing needs and meet the business deadlines to create new products and improve existing products and develop business solutions.

 

  • Financial Accountability – Formulate and achieve financial targets. Assume financial reporting responsibilities.

 

  • Communication – Clearly convey common vision, objectives and strategy. Build effective relationships with colleagues, customers (internal and external) and senior management to convey a sense of urgency and thus ensure efficient execution of day-to-day operations and strategic plans.

 

  • Contributor Management - Manage key author relationships, including contract negotiation, manuscript chasing, product design as required.

 

  • Reporting – Provide regular and accurate reporting on progress vs plan. Reporting should be focused on project progress, measuring success and early identification of problems. Reporting should be proactive, transparent and timely.

 

  • Networking – become an ambassador for the business, known in legal and academic circles by attending events, setting external meetings and so on. Aim to become go to editor for new authors and present a professional image of the company to our communities.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • University degree or equivalent (Legal degree useful but not essential)
  • Strong commercial/business acumen
  • Significant publishing and/or management experience a plus
  • Strategic planning and strong leadership skills
  • Strong relationship-building and performance management skills
  • Well-developed research skills
  • Demonstrated financial and budget management skills, including experience in financial reporting
  • Ability to drive revenue growth, increase market share, develop new products and be organizationally effective
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint
  • Good working knowledge of publishing workflow from idea conception through to receipt by customer
