About GDI

The Global Development Incubator (GDI) is an organization that builds start-ups, incubates partnerships, and strengthens existing organizations for social impact around the world. We have offices in East Asia, North America and East Africa.

We are different from typical consultants and play a mix of the strategist and implementer role to   spin out new organizations and partnerships over 2-3 years. We are a team of entrepreneurs and builders, and often second our staff to take on senior management roles. Our model is like operational private equity for the non-profit sector. We measure our success by what we achieve in real-world impact, as opposed to ending our work with ideas in a power-point deck.

Our team in East Asia consists of mission-driven professionals who have backgrounds in strategy and management consulting (private and public sector); and executive general management in non-profit and impact investment contexts.

Examples of our work and impact in 2017:

• China: We transformed Huiling’s HQ (Huiling is China’s largest grassroots non-profit with operations in 22 provinces and 28 cities). Our Senior Associate seconded in as Vice President of HQ operations to build new management capabilities and help Huiling to accelerate the replication of their model (franchising) to increase service access to people with intellectual and development disabilities. Huiling is on track for its goal of expanding to all 31 provinces in China by 2020; increasing their rate of franchised expansion from 1 per year to 3 per year.
• China: We operated an accelerator program in partnership with Narada Foundation to help high potential non-profits and social enterprises identify and achieve their end-game for impact at scale. We ran two cohorts in 2017 (11 organizations) and we will select the highest potential organizations to work with us for one year to help them achieve their end-game.
• India: We incubated SelectHER (www.selecther.org): SelectHER is a retail upskilling collective action initiative that recruits, trains and empowers underprivileged women for careers in lifestyle retail in India. SelectHER will create 100 jobs for underprivileged women in 2017 alone, recruiting into top companies such as Fossil Group and Madura Group.
• Global: We are incubating the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery, which was recently awarded $50m USD from US and UK Governments. Our initial focus is on South Asia and South East Asia. GDI’s Director has been seconded in on the senior management team to oversee strategy, private sector engagement and impact measurement.
