Major Duties:

• Conduct field trips to identify, collect and understand the growing requirements of candidate native plant species suitable for greening and landscaping in KFBG and urban setting (roofs, walls, roadsides, parks, etc.);
• Develop horticultural techniques to germinate, cultivate and propagate native plants and investigate their potential for urban greening;
• To manage and maintain the propagation facilities and cultivation areas, generally, throughout the gardens at KFBG;
• Promote the use of native plants in Hong Kong;
• Utilize concepts of ecological landscaping such as green buildings and other constructions following sustainable principles in daily work;
• Be involved in monitoring and managing various forest monitoring, restoration and enhancement plots in KFBG;
• Train and engage volunteers and interns in horticultural practices, urban greening as well as in forest restoration and monitoring projects;
• To maintain, review and develop the electronic database and inventory system of the living collections;
• To assist in the development of theme gardens and inspiring interpretations to showcase topics such as plant-animal interactions, ecology of plants and cultural as well as natural heritage;
• To plan and supervise the rosters, attendance records and work of the horticultural ground staff;
• To handle general administrative duties and assist with daily operations;
• Provide capacity building to external partners and colleagues;
• Maintain, review and keep up-to-date electronic databases, inventory systems and photo libraries for living specimens in KFBG’s nurseries;
• Utilize and ensure safe working practices within KFBG.

Requirements:

• Commitment to the mission, vision and values of KFBGC;
• 2 years’ experience in horticulture, landscaping or botanic garden works;
• Must have knowledge to devise horticultural regimes and the practical skill to adequately care for the propagation, planting feeding, pest control, landscaping and databasing of all plants in the collection, and understand how this work relates to the broader conservation-focused programmes;  
• Good working knowledge of the plants of Hong Kong, South China and the region;
• Competent in both written and verbal Cantonese and English; competence in Mandarin  would be a distinct advantage;
• Strong communication skills;  
• Able to cope with regular physically demanding tasks, including working on slopes, enjoy working outside throughout the year;
• Possession of a valid light vehicle driving license;
• Open minded and recognizes the validity of all spiritual paths.
