Job Description

We are currently seeking a highly energetic and motivated Research Assistant to join the Hong Kong Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, based at the Hong Kong Science Park. The appointee will have the opportunity to design and maintain data organization and data-sharing servers to improve data access efficiency for various life science research projects in the Center. This is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself into an interdisciplinary field that brings together information technology with biology and to contribute to the vision of open data sharing.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES 

  • Collect, manage, and study biological data (microscopy images and/or NGS data)
  • Develop and deploy custom-made scripts or programs that integrate with other software (e.g. python scripts that auto generate .sql files from a set of data)
  • Carry out data entry tasks and maintain good records of the data in the laboratory
  • Report to a team leader or his/her delegates and work closely with graduate students or research staff.
  • Attend project meetings as needed
  • Any duties assigned

REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics/computer science or a related field. Interest in the field of life sciences would be beneficial but prior knowledge in this area is not required. Fresh graduates are welcomed.
  • Strong data organisation skills, preferably with knowledge in using database languages such as MySQL, MongoDB.
  • Strong programming skill, especially with R, Perl and Python
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Familiarity with the administration of Linux-based systems using shell scripting, preferably with prior knowledge in troubleshooting software installation, deployment, and execution.
  • Good organizational skills with an appreciation of software engineering practices and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to learn fast and communicate effectively in Cantonese and English. Effective communication in Putonghua is preferred.
  • Experience in data organization and technology is a plus

SALARY AND BENEFITS

A highly competitive salary will be commensurate with qualification and experience in addition to medical and dental benefits as well as annual leave. The appointment will be offered a renewable one-year contract, subject to mutual agreement and performance.
