Oak Maritime Group is a multi-generational family enterprise engaged in diversified activities including shipping, financial asset investments and real estate. Currently, Oak Maritime Group consists of three separate legal group structures (“P1”, “P2”, and “P3”), with various underlying companies designated to focus on different business activities. 

The first group (P1), the group mainly engages in financial asset investments. 

The second group (P2), the group has extensive interests in dry cargo bulk carriers and liquid cargo vessels trading in international water, and ship brokering business worldwide.

The third group (P3), the principal business activities of P3 currently are investments in immovable properties and listed equities, and potentially, venture capital investments. 

Position Overview

Based in Hong Kong the VP Commercial Strategy and Commercial Management (Shipping) will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Oak Maritime Group’s shipping legacy. Reporting directly to the Group Chairman, this position involves collaboration with the VP Technical (Shipping), VP Finance, VP Corporate Services, and the Assistant to Chairman. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and defining the sustainable growth strategy in fleet expansion and value added services for the family’s shipping legacy business, including but not limited to leading the current human capital team, revitalizing the brand, establishing a new office in Japan, and driving growth in S&P and chartering brokerage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Growth Development:

    • Design and implement a comprehensive growth strategy for the P2.

    • Identify new market opportunities and develop initiatives to capture these opportunities.

    • Conduct regular market assessments to adapt strategies based on evolving industry trends.

  • Brand Revitalization:

    • Rebuild and enhance the branding of the family’s shipping business legacy.

    • Develop marketing strategies to promote the brand effectively.

    • Collaborate with external agencies to ensure consistent brand messaging across all platforms.

  • New Office Establishment:

    • Lead the establishment of a new office in Japan, including market analysis, site selection, and operational setup.

    • Ensure alignment with the overall strategic goals of the family office.

    • Recruit and train local talent to build a high-performing team in the new office.

  • Sales Leadership:

    • Drive profitable sales initiatives for S&P (Sales and Purchase) and chartering brokerage for the entire P2 group.

    • Establish and manage relationships with key clients and stakeholders.

    • Develop robust sales and chartering training programs to enhance team performance and effectiveness.

  • Performance Management:

    • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for the existing brokerage and commercial chartering teams in Hong Kong.

    • Monitor performance metrics and implement improvement plans as needed.

    • Conduct regular performance reviews to ensure teams are meeting their objectives.

  • Board Reporting:

    • Prepare and present regular reports and updates to the Board of Directors (BOD).

    • Ensure transparency and accountability in all commercial operations.

    • Provide strategic recommendations based on data analysis and market insights.

Immediate Assignment (First 3 Months):

Within the first three months, the candidate will be responsible for presenting a comprehensive growth strategy and detailed implementation plan to the Group Chairman and the Board. This plan must align stakeholder, seek agreements and obtain the necessary approvals. A thorough financial business case, including a detailed ROI analysis, should be included in the detailed implementation plan.

Additional Information:

After an initial 12-month strategic assignment with defined outcomes, the candidate will have the opportunity to either continue building the shipping legacy within the family office or transition into an executive role to drive the growth of a listed company nurtured by the family office. This dual-path approach allows for career development and engagement with broader business initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Maritime Studies, or a related field; MBA preferred.

  • Proven experience in commercial strategy, management, and operations within the shipping or maritime industry.

  • Strong understanding of the ship management sector and market dynamics.

  • Experience in establishing operations in new geographic markets, particularly in Asia.

  • Exceptional leadership, team management and collaboration skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • Strategic thinker with a systematic and results-oriented mindset.

Company Info

We are the corporate service arm of a medium size Asian shipping group with extensive interests in bulk carriers and crude oil tankers as well as serving as the family office of the controlling family which has diverse interests in agriculture, properties and other investments. With the expanding job scope, we are currently seeking high caliber personnel to fill the position of Company Secretarial - Compliance Coordinator to provide corporate services to the shipping group and the family office.
