Job Description
The Systems Integration Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving web-based applications and API-driven services that connect HKIS’s core systems. This role focuses on application development, scripting, and automation through APIs, enhancing the functionality, usability, and reliability of HKIS’s digital ecosystem. The engineer collaborates closely with IT and Data Services teams to extend and integrate existing platforms such as PowerSchool and Dynamics 365 supporting schoolwide operations through effective web and system integrations.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Application & Web Development
Design, develop, and maintain web applications, portals, and internal tools supporting HKIS operations.
Manage integrations between web interfaces, APIs, and backend databases.
Implement best practices for secure coding, version control, and application lifecycle management.
Ensure systems are maintainable, scalable, and aligned with user and departmental needs.
System Integrations & APIs
Develop and maintain integrations between HKIS systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Dynamics 365) through custom APIs and scripted automations.
Build and manage API endpoints, webhooks, and data exchange scripts that extend third-party applications.
Monitor and troubleshoot integration processes to ensure reliability and performance.
Contribute to the automation of operational workflows that currently require manual intervention.
Database & Scripting
Write efficient SQL queries and scripts to support applications and system integrations.
Perform data lookups, quality checks, and updates needed for web app functionality and API synchronization.
Collaborate with the Database Administrator and Data Engineer to ensure systems interact efficiently with underlying data stores.
Collaboration & Support
Work closely with divisional tech teams, IT, and vendors to design, build, and maintain integrations aligned with school and user needs.
Document applications, APIs, and automation scripts to ensure sustainability.
Provide technical support and troubleshooting for web applications and integrations owned by the Data Services team.
Other
Undertake other duties and functions as required that will impact and strengthen the contributions of the department and overall operations of the school.
Minimum requirements and qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
Experience:
3+ years of experience in systems integration and software and web development.
Experience in K–12 or higher education environments preferred but not required.
Experience with PowerSchool SIS or similar school management systems preferred but not required.
Experience with Dynamics 365 preferred but not required.
Required skills:
Technical Skills
Strong experience in developing web applications and APIs using PHP or a similar server-side language (e.g., Python, Node.js, .NET).
Proficiency in RESTful API design, authentication standards (OAuth, tokens), and JSON/XML data handling.
Familiarity with front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and responsive web design principles.
Experience managing and deploying applications on web servers (Apache preferred).
Working knowledge of SQL for application-level queries and automation scripts.
Understanding of data exchange tools and middleware (Boomi experience a plus).

Ability to manage the full lifecycle of web application projects from requirements gathering to deployment and support.
